US 98 Widening Project

Project Details

Work to widen and improve U.S. 98 in Walton County between Emerald Bay Drive to Tang-O- Mar Drive began fall 2016. In June 2018, all travel lanes were shifted to the north side of U.S. 98 to allow crews to construct the new eastbound travel lanes. The $42 million project includes widening the roadway from four to six travel lanes, new bicycle lanes and sidewalks on each side of the roadway and drainage system improvements. The speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph. Slow down during inclement weather and be alert of water on the roadway. Use caution when traveling on the outside travel lanes. Drivers making right turns will be slowing down to access business driveways and side streets.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway. March 11- March 27 2022 is the designated spring break work suspension period.

Note: All information is preliminary and subject to change without notice. All traffic has been shifted to the east bound roadway. Work has started on the main entrance to the outlet mall. Reconstruction of the west bound traffic is in progress.
